Arts Leaders Urged To Quit     

A LOCAL authority is calling for the resignation of the leaders of the Arts Council of Wales over the body’s drama strategy for Gwent.
Monmouthshire County Council is inviting all the local authorities in south-east Wales to join it in its campaign to oust the arts council’s chairwoman Sybil Crouch and chief executive Joanna Weston.

The county council is also calling for a review of the whole arts strategy for Wales.

Last year the Arts Council of Wales attempted to cut down the number of theatre-in-education companies in Wales and to switch Gwent Theatre’s franchise to Cardiff-based Theatr Iolo.

Uproar followed, as Gwent Theatre has been working in the area for more than two decades.

The Arts Council was forced to postpone the new strategy for a year, and following that the National Assembly decided it should review the arts council’s provision.

At a full meeting of Monmouthshire council, a proposal from councillor Verona Nelmes for the council to lobby the Assembly on the issue was unanimously backed
