Scripting the future in Clwyd

Sgript Cymru, the national new writing company for Wales, has recently appointed of the first of three Community Writers as part of their Arts Council of Wales Lottery funded Community Writers’ scheme

Michael Stevens will be based at Clwyd Theatr Cymru for three months. He will run regular workshops with both experienced writers and young people new to the theatre. Regular sessions will be held in both Welsh and English at the Theatre and at The Stiwt in Rhosllannerchrugog and St.Asaph Arts Centre at Ysgol Glan Clwyd.

Michael is well known locally as a writer of large-cast community plays. His ‘Gresford’ & ‘Shotton’ have both been seen at Clwyd Theatr Cymru with large community casts.

This residency is part of a Wales-wide initiative which will place Community Writers in Mold, Swansea, Holyhead and the surrounding areas=. There will be a focus on encouraging young people to write plays for the stage, with help from Michael. More experienced writers will have one-to-one sessions on their plays. Both will see their work given a public reading.

At the end of the three months professional actors and directors will work on the scripts produced in script-in-hand readings. These will form part of a mini festival of workshops, and readings held at Clwyd Theatr Cymru entitled: Sgript Xplosure!

A day of taster workshops will be held at Clwyd Theatr Cymru on Saturday September 8th, with workshops all the following week in Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire in schools, community centres and writers groups all the following week. Sgript Xplosure will be at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, November 15th 16th & 17th.

The projects are a small part of Sgript Cymru’s ongoing commitment to developing the best contemporary writing for the stage in Wales. We hope to discover writers who will bring fresh and local voices to the theatre scene in Wales
