GYPT PERFORM RARE PINTER DOUBLE BILL

GYPT PERFORM RARE PINTER DOUBLE BILL Two rarely performed plays by Harold Pinter feature in a double bill performed by senior members of Gwent Young People’s Theatre at the Melville Theatre in the Drama Centre, Abergavenny, next week.

Under director Chris Durnall the company is staging an early work Family Voices and Monologue written in 1980 by the great playwright who last year was awarded the Nobel prize for literature.

On Wednesday evening, 28 November there will be a dress rehearsal open to the public with performances also on Thursday and Friday evening 29 and 30 November all at 7.30pm

Family Voices is written as a series of monologues featuring an exchange of letters between a mother and her absent son.
Her desperate attempts to bring him back from his lodgings in a sleazy London boarding house become more ill attuned, serving only to accentuate the irreparable rift between them.

Monologue is a ‘ghostly wistful reverie’ in which a man is besieged by memories of old times when he and his friend were both lovers of a girl who transferred her affections from one to the other.
Chris Durnall says the play is a collector’s item reminding us how, in Pinter, the past is always a means of sustaining us in the imperfect future.

Harold Pinter is one of the UK’s most famous playwrights who has written 29 plays and over 20 screenplays for film and television. His most well-known plays, The Birthday Party and The Caretaker have been on TV.

GYPT, established over 50 years ago, has a reputation for consistently high standards and has won critical acclaim for recent productions which include Arnold Wesker’s The Wedding Feast and Orwell’s Animal Farm.

Tickets for the Melville Theatre (£6 and £4) are from the Borough Theatre box office, Abergavenny, tel 01873 850805 For more information contact Gwent Theatre, 01873 853167 email gwenttie@uwclub.net www.gwenttheatre.com.
