Gwent Theatre PRESS RELEASE from LLEW SMITH MP (Blaenau Gwent) and DON TOUHIG MP (Islwyn)

MPs, LLEW SMITH and DON TOUHIG have been refused access by the Arts Council of Wales to the successful bid by the Cardiff based Company who have been made responsible for developing Theatre in Education in Gwent.

What the MPs have discovered, is that only three of the six members of the Evaluating Board who are responsible for evaluating the bids and deciding on the excellence of the Companies had in fact seen any of the work produced by Gwent Theatre in Education who have been responsible for the past 23 years and wish to continue developing this work.

They were also shocked to find that not one person or organisation from Gwent supported the successful application from the Cardiff based Company whereas Gwent Theatre in Education had the overwhelming support of the schools, community groups, public bodies and representatives.

Mr. Touhig said

‘This is quango government at its worst. Here we have a group of people deciding the future of this wonderful Theatre Group, knowing very little about Gwent Theatre in Education’.
‘They meet behind closed doors, spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money and when MPs ask legitimate questions about the various bids they received, they refuse to give us the information.’

Llew Smith stated that

‘Those responsible, must either reverse the decision or resign. They are treating the people of Gwent like idiots, obviously believing that we are not capable of deciding what form of Theatre in Education we want and who should be responsible for it.’

‘Gwent Theatre in Education have been responsible for the past 23 years and are one of the finest Company’s in the UK and must be allowed to continue.’
