Simon Thorne Blends Jazz and Opera at Sherman

Simon Thorne Blends Jazz and Opera at Sherman One of Wales’s most innovative artists, Simon Thorne, premieres his groundbreaking new work The Howl in Arcadia this month at Sherman, Cardiff.

The outcome of an Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales major award, The Howl in Arcadia fuses spoken text, music and physical performance. Under the direction of Simon Thorne, and in collaboration with writer and lighting designer, Ace McCarron, The Howl in Arcadia strips back to the bare essentials of musical storytelling. Simon Thorne comments:

“It’s the story of a war correspondent who is trying to do her job. But when paradise has been overrun by the ruthless, she wonders what there is left to say that can actually make a difference, which I think is a really interesting question for us all.”

The Howl in Arcadia features music from cult band The Cherubs. Led by Simon Thorne, The Cherubs combine jazz and baroque opera along with the unique voice of Alex Alderton. Thorne continues:

“Is it an opera? I’m not sure. It’s certainly an attempt to turn opera into the strange and exhilarating experience it once was.”

The Howl in Arcadia will be on at Sherman on 19 – 20 March before touring to Aberystwyth and later to Poland. Tickets are £8 (Reductions £6) and can be booked from Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at
