Gwent Conservative candidate supports Gwent Theatre's campaign

"Gwent Theatre must stay" says prospective Conservative Assembly candidate
David Davies, prospective Conservative Assembly Candidate for Monmouth has attacked proposals that would mean the end of a Gwent based Theatre in Education Company.
Mr. Davies spoke out after visiting Gwent Theatre, which introduces young people to the arts. New proposals by the Arts Council for Wales would halve the number of Theatre in Education (TIE) companies in wales, and reduce overall funding - a move which could mean the end for the Abergavenny based theatre company.
"Decisions like this should be taken by the Welsh Assembly" said Mr. Davies. "I was against the Assembly on the grounds of cost, but if we're going to have one we might as well use it. This proposal could well mean the end of Gwent Theatre and it should be fully debated not simply rushed through without proper consideration
Mr. Davies also attacked the overall cut in funding for TIE's saying:
"The Welsh Office are going to spend three and a half million pounds next year on an ongoing Assembly information campaign - yet groups such as Gwent Theatre which do a wonderful job of introducing young people to the arts are being starved of funds; the priorities are all wrong"
Mr. Davies has pledged full support for keeping Gwent Theatre and has written to the Secretary of State for Wales to ask that the Arts Council for wales' proposals be delayed until the Assembly is up and running
