Gary Owen scoops major Arts Council creative wales award “Voices Wales”

Gary's plays include Crazy Gary's Mobile Disco, The Shadow of a Boy, and The Drowned World. He has written for the Royal National Theatre, the National Theatre of Scotland, Paines Plough, Sgript Cymru, the Watford Palace Theatre and the Drum, Plymouth, and has won the George Devine Award, the Meyer Whitworth Award, the Pearson Best Play Award and a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival. Gary's plays have been translated into ten languages and are published by Methuen.

Gary wishes to use his Creative Wales Award to move beyond the personal, small scale work he’s done so far and write plays on larger scale, across a bigger canvas: plays that could truly count as 'national theatre'. To lay the groundwork for this, he intends to carry out an oral history project called Voices Wales - the lives of people in Wales, captured in their own words, in the first person. Out of this material he'll create a big new play - an act of composition which would arrange the material into a dramatically and poetically pleasing form, and be a literal snapshot of ‘the state of the natio
