RWCMD opens summer season with a hard-hitting piece of new writing
|
Tiger Country is a response to the 40th anniversary of Enoch Powell's Rivers of Bloody speech. The play is set in an undisclosed city and a non-specific time, though we know it takes place somewhere at the dawn of the eighties. If you can remember back that far (and I can!), during a five year period our cities went through a time of rioting and civil unrest bought about by racial conflict - Lewisham, Southall, St Pauls, Handsworth, Brixton to name but a few. Our cities were burning. To some extent the racial conflict is rising again today.
The play follows the stories of three people, Malcolm, Ruth and Dennis, in the twenty four hours run-up to a race riot. The three stories are about love, but the final act is about when the political and personal collide. The violence that ensues between the three of them during the riot is never made clear as to whether it is reaction to the political climate or a reaction to the very personal things that have just happened to them.
Tiger Country
In a British city, sometime at the dawn of the eighties, Malc, Dennis and Ruth are on the eve of a major event.
Malc’s flyers are ruined, Dennis can’t rid himself of the woman in his flat and Ruth is on the verge of discovering that your friends aren't always who you think…
As the following 24 hours unfold three stories of three seemingly random strangers intertwine as they are fatefully forced into a situation that can only have one outcome.
A new drama from Bristol-based writer Sharon Clark portraying three people's life-changing fallout as the political and personal collide.
‘Clark has an ear for dialogue and an ability to craft a play that sets her head and shoulders above many of her contemporaries.’
The Independent
A commissioned script, in collaboration with the Watford Palace Theatre.

“I have had three plays produced at Bristol Old Vic, two in Peterborough, a Radio 3 play, rehearsed readings at the John Caird company and Watford, and have a play in development with Cheltenham Everyman. I am also currently running the writing initiative at the Tobacco Factory which is called Scriptspace.
