Press release from Gwent Theatre on the changes to the Draft Drama strategy
|
As a result of responses to the Draft Drama Strategy the ACW has decided to support the current network of eight theatre in education companies for the full financial year to the end of March 2000, with the intention of its grant aid to a successor framework to take effect from 2000-2001. The Council's amendments to the Draft Strategy as regards theatre for young people will mean that ACW's commitment to the eight companies which form the current network cease at the end of March 2000. They will be consulting further with companies and local authorities on the design of the new arrangements. The grant offered to Gwent Theatr for the coming year is the same as was received in the current year which already represents a decrease in real terms.
Gwent Theatre are relieved that they can now produce a planned programme of work for the full year but are very aware that there is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure that Gwent Theatre is part of the 'successor framework', whatever that may be. The company is at the very heart of school and community involvement in theatre in the Greater Gwent area and want to make sure that service will continue to be delivered to at least the same level of high quality, frequency and volume as at present. During 1998/99 the company presented four productions, giving 224 performances for 18,707 young people in schools and the community, figures that represent an increase in those for the previous year. The company has also presented 5 youth theatre productions with members of the Gwent Young People's Theatre and a regular programme of plays, films, workshops and other activities at their base, The Melville Theatre in Abergavenny
In addition to the above amendment to the the Strategy the ACW have also agreed to reinstate Hijinx Theatre for 1999-2000 and t review the supply of professional productions to smaller communities. The Council has agreed to proceed with the broad framework of the Strategy as described in the Draft Consultation Paper and a further and final strategy will be published, along with a review of the responses received.
Gwent Theatre still maintain that such radical and far-reaching changes in the arts should be the subject of proper and considered debate by the new National Assembly and that adequate levels of funding should be identified for a comprehensive arts provision for the whole of Wales
