Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Summer Opera Production

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Summer Opera Production An opera bouffe that sparkles at every turn L’Etoile takes centre stage at the Sherman, Cardiff in July.

Light, fluffy and accessible yet maintaining an irresistible charm and a witty satiric bite, this is perhaps Chabrier’s most original and certainly most delightful piece. Stravinsky referred to it as a ‘little masterpiece,’ and Reinaldo Hahn as a ‘fine pearl of French Operetta.’

The plotline, in the best tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan, is as exceedingly mad as it is complicated: mad kings, young peddlers, love intrigues, astrologers and possible executions, it’s full of zany
mix-ups, and a veritable pot-pourri of melodic freshness.

‘This brilliant and tasteful opera triumphs as each flamboyant scene dissolves into the next, highlighting the twists and turns that continually surprise in their invention. It’s an over-the-top class act from overture to the closing chorus,’ says director Vivian Coates.

Conducted by David Jones and directed by Vivian Coates, artistic director of Lyric Opera, Dublin, this wonderful opera is a fabulous showcase for the talents of the final year Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama students.
