Tall tales from the King of fantasy

Tall tales from the King of fantasy The perfect escape to the dismal weather and credit crunch comes in the form of the witty and charming comedy Billy Liar, at the New Theatre from Tuesday 3 – Saturday 7 March. Even better, tickets for this high quality drama are just £8 and £12.50!

Billy Fisher is a dreamer, preferring to escape to his fantasy world where he is ruler, hero and lover than face his hum-drum life as an undertaker’s clerk with a complicated love life. But as he continues to tell his tall tales which create havoc in his work and love life his hilarious exploits lead him to make a difficult decision.

The show enjoys the hilarious Northern sense of humour which has become more popular in recent years thanks to the success of comedians such as Peter Kay.

Helen Fraser will be familiar to audiences as the grumpy Sylvia ‘Bodybag’ Hollamby from the ITV drama series Bad Girls. She later reprised her role in the West End stage version of the show. Helen starred in the 1963 film Billy Liar as Barbara and now returns to the story as Billy’s mother.

Helen is joined by an a talented cast that includes Dicken Ashworth (Coronation Street), Lauren Drummond (Waterloo Road), Victoria Hawkins (Emmerdale), Holly Quin-Ahkrah (Grange Hill), Adam Henderson Scott (Byker Grove), Chris Hannon (Coronation Street) and Sally Sanders.

Billy Liar began life as a novel by Keith Waterhouse before being adapted to the stage by his friend Willis Hall. The original West End production starred Albert Finney. Tom Courtney (who understudied Finney) took the title role in the film. The show has since been produced all over the world.

Billy Liar is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 3 – Saturday 7 March. Tickets are £8 and £12.50 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
