Swansea Metropolitan University Performing arts Showcase 20-29th May 2009

Swansea Metropolitan University Performing arts Showcase 20-29th May 2009 This May, Swansea plays host to the Performing Arts degree course Showcase festival. This year's event will prove to be the most significant to date, presenting two outstanding pieces of a diverse nature by the performing art students, directed by staff and professional directors.

The Showcase festival has been running since 2004 and has been designed to give students an experience of working in the theatre professionally

The works being presented at the Showcase include:

'Short Tales of pleasure'
Step into a theatrical pleasure dome as students present an irreverent and intriguing investigation into the world of pleasure. How do we live with the paradox of pleasure and pain ' can we live without it? Can you have too much? Where do we find it? This original piece of work, devised by the company, seeks to explore these and many other questions with a sense of play, humour and adventure. From the downright wacky to the mundane and familiar this performance invites us to step into a strangely familiar world to reveal a little of what we all fancy, and why.

'Attempts on her life'
The play is ostensibly an exploration of the social construction of a tragic female ' Anny. However it is clear that the author is less concerned with the narrative structure of conventional tragedy and more with charting the distinctive, hyper- real, even illusory characteristic of contemporary life itself.
There are many fashionable ways of expressing these contemporary dilemmas ' the 'real is dead' is one of them. Jean Baudrillard and his followers believe that we remain blissfully incarcerated within a series of images and referents that no longer signify anything that can be usefully referred to as the real. We live in and on a world of surfaces.

The showcase will be touring to four venues with seven performances making this the largest tour the performing arts course has undertaken until now. Townhill Theatre (Swansea), The Torch (Milford Haven) and The Helix space (Dublin) and The Grand theatre Arts wing (Swansea)
