Setting the Stage for Tommorow

Last Wednesday, September 19th, Sgript Cymru, the national company for contemporary drama in Wales, hosted a small reception for specifically invited members of the business and media community in Cardiff Bay at The Glee Club in Mermaid Quay.

As a relatively new company, working at the grassroots and in communities as well as through our regular productions, the aim was to introduce the company’s range of work in both languages to people who otherwise might not have been aware of it. While not a public performance, the company showcased some extracts from its work in progress – Geraint Lewis’s “Ysbryd Beca” and Dic Edwards’s “Franco’s Bastard” – and also spoke directly to the audience about its work and priorities.

Under the banner of “Setting The Stage For Tomorrow,” the company announced some of its plans for the year ahead, including the national tour of “Ysbryd Beca,” which opens in Pwllheli on October 4th and finishes at Chapter in Cardiff, October 24th-27th, as well as its commitment to produce “Franco’s Bastard” in 2002.

The audience was able to mingle with writers and the actors who took part, as well as supporters of the company’ work, including actor Jason Hughes, who had travelled down from London.

The company was very grateful to all those who attended and even more so to those companies and organisations that sponsored the evening on our behalf – Cambrensis, S4C, The Wales Digital College, Cyfle and The Co-operative Bank. This is an interesting and critical moment for the arts in Wales and the support of the business and media community is valued and greatly needed.

From this useful beginning, Sgript Cymru intends to continue to work with various partners in order to set a confident and vibrant stage for tomorrow.
