Youth Project Aims For Pupils to Believe in Themselves

Youth Project Aims For Pupils to Believe in Themselves A challenging but inspiring pilot programme has been created and developed by two local Arts based companies; Cwmni FranWen based in Porthaethwy, Ynys Môn (who provides challenging theatre of the highest standard for children and young people) and Dawns i Bawb (the Umbrella Community Dance Company for North West Wales) based in Galeri in Caernarfon.

Three local artists have been chosen to be trained and to work alongside experts from Contact Theatre in Manchester, with youths from Ysgol Coed Menai and the Bryn Llwyd Unit Bangor. The project involves working with young people with a particular focus on those who are often termed as hard to reach. The power of artistic activities have been proven to be highly beneficial in raising self respect, nurturing self belief, trust and therefore stimulating the potential capabilities in people.

The main aspiration of the project is for the young people to take ownership and take the lead on an artistic creation of their own choosing. The project will deliver 12 days of varied activities that will introduce the young people to artistic disciplines that will help them develop new skills, inspire and stimulate them. The outcome of the project will be the motivation and responsibility of the group involved to create a short performance bringing together the art forms that they have explored during the project. Another facet of this project will be developing the skills of the artists involved. There is currently very little provision for this specific work due to the lack of qualified artists working in the area.

On the menu is a programme of activities including various workshops sessions such as Street Dance, Rapping, Lyric Writing, Script Writing and Drama Performance that will encourage the young people in gaining communication skills and develop their ability to teamwork. Key areas to be developed during the project are: fundamentals of performance, discussion and active participation that will nurture their confidence and encourage them to take pride in their achievements. The work that’s created will have happened in an atmosphere of trust, support and respect of one another.

Said Artistic Director of Cwmni Fran Wen Iola Ynyr: “Cwmni Fran Wen is delighted to work with Ysgol Coedmenai and the Bryn Llwyd Unit Bangor. We are looking forward to offer opportunities and support, so that the young people can experiment with multi forms of artistry led by professional artists. The company is also pleased to collaborate and initiate new creative partnerships with Dawns i Bawb and Contact Theatre, Manchester. We hope that we will be able to develop the scheme in different areas in the near future.”

The process will culminate in an informal presentation of the work that has been achieved by the two groups.
Funding was made available for this innovative collaboration by the Arts Council of Wales.
This project is also a collaboration with Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s Arts Development Scheme “Routes to the Summit” that will entitle the participants an elementary qualification of Introduction to the Arts.
