Swansea Community Writer’s Scheme

Sgript Cymru, the national new writing company for Wales, has recently appointed the second of three Community Writers as part of their Arts Council of Wales Lottery funded Community Writers’ scheme.

Clare Duffy will divide her time between Swansea Grand and Swansea University Department of Adult and Continuing Education for three months. She will run regular workshops with both experienced writers and young people new to the theatre. Regular sessions will be held in both Welsh and English.

The residency is part of a Wales-wide initiative that will place Community writers in Mold, Swansea, Holyhead and the surrounding areas. The focus is on encouraging young people to write plays for the stage, working towards their own full-length stage play guided by the experienced playwright. While more experienced writers will have one-to-one sessions on their plays and see their work given a public reading.

At the end of the three months professional actors and directors will work on the scripts produced resulting in script-in-hand readings. These will form part of a mini festival of workshops, and readings to be held at the Dylan Thomas Centre entitled: Sgript Xplosure!

In addition to the regular weekly workshops, Clare Duffy will be in residence on Mondays and Tuesdays over the next 10 weeks for individual dramaturgical sessions. You can reach her directly at the Department of Continuing Education, Swansea University on those days. You can book time to see her on: 01792 295794.
