Theatre in Wales

The latest theatre, dance and performance news

THE THREAT OF SILENCE The Threat of Silence is an innovative and dynamic evocation of the languages of quietude and silence. Drawing on the combined talents of artists from around the world, Wales based director Jill Greenhalgh creates an uncomfortably beautiful new theatre work, weaving together elements of performance – space, technology, text, action and sound. The resulting work is the creation of a place of refuge from the ever increasing noise, information overload and escapist trivia that constantly invades our daily modern lives. The Threat of Silence performs at Theatr Mwldan on 9th September at 7.30pm before going on to tour to Aberystwyth University , Taliesin Arts Centre Swansea, and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff .

The piece features the talents of Welsh performance artist Eddie Ladd, whose career has encompassed numerous roles from singer, dancer and actress to presenting several television shows, including a pop show for S4C and an arts magazine programme for BBC Wales. Eddie was awarded a NESTA fellowship in 2002. The performance will also feature wonderfully atmospheric classical pieces such as Prelude in Eb major: 4th Suite by Bach, Buciumeana by Bartók and Ist Sonata in Bb major by Vivaldi, all played by renowned cellist Nicola Thomas. Nicola has studied with the likes of William Pleeth, Moray Welsh, Ralph Kircshbaum and Jaqueline Du Pre, and has won the Barbarolli and Bach cello prizes. She has performed in many chamber ensembles including the London Mozart Players and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields . Now living in Wales , Nicola has a busy teaching practise and is the founder and Artistic Director of the West Coast School of Chamber Music. She plays a JB Ceruti cello of 1801.

Based in Llangrannog and now teaching at Aberystwyth University , Jill Greenhalgh has been making theatre in Wales and touring her work worldwide for 30 years. During the the course of the past year, Jill has been drawing on the expertise of several artists, each one exploring the aesthetics of quietude within their own fields of work. Film and video installation artist Zoe Christiansen ( Norway ), published writer Margaret Cameron ( Australia ), and film maker Sara Penrhyn-Jones ( Wales ) are all celebrated in their fields and have a lifetime of professional work behind them, and together with Eddie Ladd and Nicola Thomas have created an evocative performance. Each is inspired by the challenge that The Threat of Silence offers.

This work builds on the political and aesthetic ideas explored in Greenhalgh’s last production The Acts - Vigia funded by a Creative Wales award and described as ‘eloquent, multi-layered, provocative and beautifully terrifying. Brave, stunning, challenging political theatre at it’s best..’ by David Adams of the Western Mail.
