On Tuesday 20th November RAW NIGHTS (Script held rehearsed reading of new plays) returned to Dempsey's Irish Bar, Castle Street Cardiff, returned with a vengeance. Certainly the night got off to a very robust start with Debra Lewis' hilarious short character sketch "FRIGGIN BAILIFF" It was performed with great gusto and humour by Roger Clark who kept up the twinkle in his eye right to the end ADDICTION By Gillian Brightmore This was a quieter more sensitive and probing piece, exploring strong lesbian attraction in a drug therapy situation. The acting, considering the very short period given to rehearsing, by Alex North and Liz Chambers was particularly subtle and restrained but uncannily real and totally convincing. Gillian is, like Deborah is a writer from the old Dempsey Days and its good to see them back! The longer piece of the evening was the first act of a new play by a writer from Monmouth, new to the Raw Night scene, Andrew Shakeshaft. "JUST SITTING" He demonstrated a near masterly skill in the manipulation of words and form and held the audience in rapped attention. Again the play was very skilfully performed by Kevin Morrish, Roger Clark, Kathy Franklin 'Liz Chambers and Alex North. All agreed we can't wait to see the second act of this play. I was pleased to hand over the reins of RAW NIGHT! (But I'll be back…) to Richard Hand and Daryl Perrin and the link up with the University of Glamorgan.
