A National Theatre for all weather

A National Theatre for all weather Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, has hailed the success of the National Theatre for Wales in a busy, well-received first nine months.

Speaking after attending The Weather Factory performed by the National Theatre in Penygroes, nr Caernarfon last night, Mr Jones said it had been exciting start to the life of Wales' first national English language theatre company.

The establishment of an English language national theatre company for Wales was a commitment in the Welsh Assembly Government's One Wales programme. The Welsh Assembly Government is supporting National Theatre Wales with funding of £3 million over three years. It held its first performance in March this year.

Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said: "The Weather Factory is a great example of some of the new, innovative work the National Theatre for Wales has been undertaking since it started.

"Their ambitious first year programme has been well-received and generated very positive reviews. There is no doubt they are meeting their aims to develop and enrich English language theatre in Wales.

"A commitment to establish an English language theatre for Wales was included in the One Wales programme of this Assembly Government so I???m extremely pleased to see it become reality."

Artistic Director John McGrath said: "National Theatre Wales is proud to present its ninth production in a year of extraordinary work throughout Wales. Like all our launch year projects, The Weather Factory grows out of its unique location - in this case, a house in Penygroes, overlooking Snowdon. Once again, National Theatre Wales is demonstrating its open approach to theatre, and the importance of really engaging with local communities"

The Weather Factory is National Theatre Wales' ninth show of 13 in a year of new theatre - so far, they've worked with 19 venues, 15 local councils, nine partner companies and nine writers.

The company won this year's TMA Award for Best Theatre Design, and, in the words of The Guardian, "has already proved itself a major player in British theatre".
