India Dance Wales celebrates tour success
|
With a successful tour of India just completed, India Dance Wales is going from strength to strength. Project manager Jenny Isaacs tells Kirstie McCrum why Arts Council cuts won’t be the death of the organisation
A DANCE company based in Cardiff may not seem the obvious choice to take classical Indian dance back to the country from which it originates – but there’s a lot about India Dance Wales that is truly unique.
The organisation, set up in 1983 by Kiran Ratna, has just completed a successful tour of Bangalore, Chennai and Trivindrum in Kerala, despite recently having its annual revenue funding of £20,000 cut by the Arts Council of Wales.
And next weekend the Cardiff dancers will help the nation celebrate India Republic Day, which takes place on Wednesday, with further performances in Wales.
“I do feel like we’re swimming against the tide sometimes, but the cuts haven’t affected any of our activities to date and opportunities are popping up left, right and centre for us,” says India Dance Wales’ project manager Jenny Isaacs.
As the administrative heart of the company, Jenny is on hand to organise the three arms of the organisation – teaching, performing and educating.
