NATIONAL THEATRE WALES, BERLIN’S PIONEERING THEATRE COMPANY RIMINI PROTOKOLL AND LOCAL CHOIR HEARTSONG COLLABORATE ON A YEAR-LONG PRODUCTION IN WEST WALES
For the 11th production in its launch year, Outdoors, National Theatre Wales has given multi-award-winning German reality theatre company Rimini Protokoll its first ever UK commission.
Aberystwyth’s Heartsong choir has been meeting once a week for 12 years. Outdoors takes place on the evening of those choir rehearsals once a week, for a year. Every Tuesday evening during term time, until February 2012, audiences of 12 will be given an ipod and earphones, and sent to walk the streets of Aberystwyth. Through those ipods, they will see and hear the stories of Heartsong choir members along their journeys – 12 different stories from real locals that lead them in different paths through the town’s narrow streets and famous seafront – until they are finally reunited in a wonderful celebration of the power of choral singing.
Rimini Protokoll is the label of the works of Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel. They produce theatre pieces, radio shows and work in the urban environment in a diverse variety of collaborative partnerships. Using research, auditions and conceptual processes, allowing what they call ‘experts’ to find their unique voice. Latest productions include Call Cutta in a Box, a one-to-one telephone performance that takes place live from a call centre in India, and 100% Berlin, a living arrangement of statistics for 100 citizens on a revolving stage. In 2007, Rimini Protokoll were awarded with the German Faust theatre award, and in 2008 the European prize for ‘New Realities in Theatre. Rimini Protokoll has three members:
Helgard Haug recently co-produced Best Before, a videogame for 200 members of the audience, with her Rimini Protokoll colleague Stefan Kaegi. She and Daniel Wetzel were awarded the Muehlheimer Dramatiker Preis 2008 for their Karl Marx: The Capital Vol.1, and the Hörspielpreis der Kriegsblinden, Germany’s highest accolade for a radio play. Most recently, in Athens they created a project with 103 Athenians on the ancient drama of Prometheus.
Stefan Kaegi often works in intercultural contexts. In 2010, he was awarded the Routes Award for Cultural Diversity by the European Cultural Foundation. In 2008, he developed Radio Muezzin in Cairo – a project about the call to prayer in the age of its technical reproduction. Since 2006, Stefan has often worked with the Argentinian writer and director Lola Arias, most recently on Chácara Paraíso with Brazilian policemen and Airport Kids with global nomads aged between seven and 13.
Daniel Wetzel mainly develops theatre concepts and performances based on people outside the theatre world. Recent theatre works with Helgard Haug include Breaking News, in which interpreters simultaneousely read though live evening news broadcasts from various countries around the world; Karl Marx: The Capital Vol.1, which has toured all over, South Korea and Japan. His project with Helgard Haug, Wallenstein: A Documentary Play had been named the most important theatre performance in Germany 2000-2010 by Germany’s biggest weekly Der Spiegel.
Heartsong Choir is a community choir that have been meeting to sing together in Aberystwyth every Tuesday for over 12 years. With over 30 members, their repertoire is entirly a cappella and includes three part Georgian folk harmony; American Shape Note songs; chants and canons from Taize in France, Africa, Eastern Europe and the UK; contemporary, modal harmony settings; Welsh and English folk songs and carols; and even the occasional 60s pop song. The songs mostly come from oral tradition, although the choir also occasionally sing some new material.
