Sherman Cymru presents two new plays as part of RAW / AMRWD initiative
|
This June, Sherman Cymru will present its second RAW / AMRWD event, a double-bill of the first plays of two emerging writers. Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Amy Hodge (who will direct one of the plays The Sanger) explains the RAW / AMRWD concept:
“With a scheduled three RAW productions this year, we are significantly increasing our output of new plays. We want to get as much great new work as we can out there and in front of an audience in a way that isn’t possible with all the demands of a full-scale production, but still with a professional cast and a Sherman Cymru commitment to quality. Put bluntly, it’s no frills theatre - the writing itself will be the main event with things like set and lighting design really stripped back.”
The two new plays both reflect on the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. The Sanger is written by Foster Marks who served as a radio operator in the Territorial Army and competed two tours of Helmand Province in Afghanistan. He says of the writing development process:
“Coming predominantly from a film background I was surprised, and obviously very pleased, at the openness with which theatre companies were prepared to read new and unsolicited writing. Sherman Cymru were the first theatre I sent ‘The Sanger’ to and from the moment that they invited me in for a chat their support has been pretty much continuous. From attending their advanced writers course, then read-throughs and finally a RAW production, they have helped me turn some longhand scenes hastily scribbled down in the backwaters of Helmand into a polished piece of theatre.”
The second play is Tân Mewn Drain, written by Dyfed Edwards and the winning play of the Drama Medal at the National Eisteddfod 2009. Dyfed comments:
"I'm delighted that Tân Mewn Drain will be staged. A play doesn't truly come alive until it is produced - it is merely a blueprint until actors act it, a director directs, designers design. This will be the first time one of my plays has been staged, and I am very excited. It's been great working with Sherman Cymru. Their support has been invaluable. Arwel Gruffydd and Sian Summers have been wonderful, and have certainly contributed to my development as a playwright. Working with the director Sara Lloyd and the great cast has also been exciting and beneficial. I can't wait to see Tân Mewn Drain come alive on stage in June."
RAW / AMRWD will be on at Chapter 8 - 11 June. The full schedule and ticket information is available from Chapter’s Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or online at www.chapter.org
