Welsh Refugee Council present award winning play as part of Refugee Week 2011

This June as part of Refugee Week 2011, the Welsh Refugee Council presents The Container, the award winning play by Clare Bayley. The Container will be performed in a 40 feet shipping container located outside Chapter Arts Centre 17 – 25 June.
The play tells the story of asylum seekers who are journeying from Somalia and Afghanistan to seek refuge in the UK. Director Bridget Keehan explains the reasons behind wanting to produce the play, which has never before been staged in Wales:
“This is a global story that has local relevance: Cardiff is home to a significant number of asylum seekers and refugees some of whom have had similar journeys to the characters in the play. It’s an extraordinary piece of writing which allows us to really get to know these characters and because it’s set in an actual shipping container it gives the audience an insight into what it might be like for them if they had to make such a journey. The combination of a great story in an incredibly theatrical setting made me very keen to direct it.’
The Container is part of Refugee Week 2011, a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. Mike Lewis, Chief Executive of the Welsh Refugee Council comments:
“Fleeing one’s country is a very traumatic and unimaginable experience for anyone, specifically when the ability to turn back is not an option. For over 20 years the Welsh Refugee Council has worked tirelessly to give support to people in this position and to highlight this issue. The challenge for us is to find creative and innovative ways to bring this message to our audiences. We are very proud to be involved in this project and hope that it will impact greatly on the perceptions of why people choose to flee their county to seek refuge in another.”
