Executive producer of Shakespeare’s Globe appointed as Artistic Director

Executive producer of Shakespeare’s Globe appointed as Artistic Director Wales Millennium Centre has appointed Conrad Lynch as the new Artistic Director, bringing a new creative direction to the Centre as it moves towards its artistic ambition of being a producing as well as presenting house.

Conrad joins the Centre from Shakespeare’s Globe where he has been Executive Producer for the past five years. He has worked with Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole to expand the national and international reach of the Globe’s work, including the development of their summer outdoor tours, which regularly visit St Donat’s Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Prior to Shakespeare’s Globe Conrad worked for a wide variety of arts organisations, including the Drill Hall, Young Vic, Oxford Stage Company (now known as Headlong) and directly before joining the Globe was Executive Director and Chief Executive of Salisbury Playhouse.

Conrad has also worked as a freelance producer most recently on the production of Entertaining Mr Sloane with Imelda Staunton and Matthew Horne in the West End.
Conrad is a trustee of Fevered Sleep, whose production of The Weather Factory was commissioned by National Theatre Wales as part of its inaugural season in which it created a “theatre map” of Wales, and is a board member of The Pacitti Company and Spill Festival of Performance.

Mark Taylor, Wales Millennium Centre’s Chief Executive, in announcing Conrad’s appointment, said, ‘As we have already set out in our Artistic Strategy for the next five years, we need to cement our reputation as a catalyst in the performing arts. To do so, we need to build credibility as a commissioner and producer of new work. To attract someone of Conrad Lynch’s reputation will undoubtedly enable us to achieve this’.

Conrad Lynch added “I’m delighted to be joining Wales Millennium Centre at this exciting time and look forward to working with Mark Taylor and the team to continue to develop the Centre’s work in Cardiff and beyond.”

Neil Constable, Chief Executive of Shakespeare’s Globe, paid tribute to Conrad’s contribution to the company: “In his role as Executive Producer at the Globe, Conrad has superbly supported Dominic Dromgoole’s artistic ambitions and led the growth of our national and international touring activities. He has been an exemplary member of the Globe family and will be sorely missed, but we are unanimous in wishing him every success in his exciting and well deserved new role.”

Nick Capaldi, Chief Executive of the Art Council of Wales, in welcoming today’s announcement, said ‘Conrad is an experienced and imaginative arts entrepreneur who has worked for a wide range of different arts organisations. His energy and expertise will help boost Wales Millennium Centre’s new artistic ambitions for the future.’

The new Artistic Director will take up his role in October this year.
