Trinity students take their show to the Edinburgh Fringe
|
A group of Trinity Saint David students are taking their talent to the national stage this summer. Members of the BA Acting and BA Theatre Design & Production courses at Carmarthen will perform and work at the world famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe when it kicks-off in the Scottish capital in August.
Their production of Random, directed by Ioan Hefin, will take place at the Greenside venue in the city which has become synonymous with Fringe performances in recent years.
It is scheduled to be performed between August 22 and 26.
The group is raising funds to help pay for the hiring of the venue for the week, as well as for accommodation and travel, and this week went £200 closer to their total following a bake sale at the Students Union at the Carmarthen campus.
The show – which is set in a waiting room where a group of different individuals have been selected at random, but they don’t know why they are there – has already toured schools and Community Centre’s in south west Wales, while it has also been taken to Cardiff.
One of the eight actors in the group, Bethan Johns, 21, said:
“Taking your show to the Edinburgh Fringe is a good way to showcase your talent.
“We’ve already performed it as a local tour and had a lot of good feedback, so as a group we decided that we would like to take it to the next stage – and that is why we are going to Edinburgh.
“It will be a great first experience after graduating and a good way to get a kick-start in the world of performance.”
The Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival and was first established back in 1947 and famous artists we’ve come to know such as Sir Ian McKellen, Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson all performed at the event in their younger years.
This budding young group still has some way to go to reach their target but they have teamed up with another Fringe-bound act from the University to raise funds through talent competitions and charity car washes, while other ideas are still in the pipeline.
The event attracted over 40,000 performers in 2010 and they are well aware of the challenge that lies ahead.
“We’ve already spoken to a group that performed at the Fringe last year who said that a lot of hard work must go into this,” added Bethan, who hails from Swansea.
“They spoke of the competition that there is to get the crowds in to watch but |
