Young people’s views take centre stage!

Young people’s views take centre stage! A free one-day workshop offering young people the chance to voice their views on the arts is being offered by Bridgend County Borough Council.

As part of the Young Critics scheme, Bridgend Arts and Community Development department has organised a special event on Saturday 16 July at the Atrium, University of Glamorgan for 20 people who are interested in exploring the role of an arts critic.

Running from 10am-4pm there will be opportunities to investigate different ways to respond to theatre and live arts including via blogging, Facebook, Vimeo and Twitter.

The Young Critics scheme is open to young people aged 12 – 25 who would like the chance to create must-read reviews of theatre, music and the arts.

It aims to develop and showcase the views and voices of young people and encourage them to think critically about the theatrical or musical productions they have seen.

Guy O’Donnell, Arts Development Officer, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to come together and let their voices be heard. It enables them to get a real feel for what being an arts critic is all about; they are young critics in the making.”

Throughout the year, those taking part are encouraged to write a number of theatrical and musical reviews.

John McGrath, Artistic Director of National Theatre Wales, said: “I have been very impressed by the quality of previous reviews and critiques produced by the young critics involved in the workshops. It is great to have young people’s voices at the centre of the debate about theatre in Wales.”

Since October 2010, the scheme has worked very successfully in partnership with a range of venues and companies including National Theatre Wales, Sherman Cymru, National Dance Company Wales, Literature Wales, Wales Millennium Centre, WNO, Theatre na Nog, Earthfall, Arts Council Wales, Night Out and Theatre Wales website.

Peter Finch, Chief Executive of Literature Wales, added: “The benefits for young people participating in the Young Critics scheme are clear. It encourages young people to engage with the arts, learn to think and write critically, develop writing skills and explore the importance of literature and writing as a career path in to the creative industries.”
