Sherman Cymru are pleased to announce the appointment of Mared Swain to the post of Associate Director. Mared will lead the development and commissioning of Sherman Cymru’s Welsh language work.
Since graduating from RWCMD in 2003, Mared has worked extensively as an actress in theatre, television and radio. She has written two short films, and was part of a writing team for Dominos for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, and has storylined the series Caerdydd with Fiction Factory for S4C.
Since 2007 she has been directing theatre and has been co-producer of Dirty Protest Theatre Company, a Cardiff based new writing company staging short plays. Mared has directed new plays which have been performed in venues including The Camden Roundhouse, Latitude Festival, Wales Millennium Centre, Sherman Cymru and Galeri in Caernarfon, alongside many fringe venues around Cardiff. Since its fruition, Dirty Protest has produced over 80 new short plays by over 70 writers including work by Chloe Moss, Lucy Kirkwood, and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Jack Thorne, Ed Hime, Gary Owen, Brad Birch, Meic Povey and Dafydd James.
In 2010 Mared was chosen as one of National Theatre Wales's Emerging Directors, and worked on the critically acclaimed production of The Persians.
On her new role, Mared comments:
“I am thrilled to be joining the team at Sherman Cymru at this very exciting time in Welsh theatre.”
Director of Sherman Cymru, Chris Ricketts, comments:
“Mared is joining us at a pivotal point in the company’s development as we begin to get ready to move back into Sherman Cymru and prepare our future programme. Mared’s strong commitment to new writing and new work complements really well the importance we give to that work and I know she will be a real asset to our future success.”
Mared will commence her new role at Sherman Cymru at the end of September.
