Bridgend young critics excel

Bridgend young critics excel Bridgend Young Critics Scheme members Rachel Williams and Chelsey Gillard recently participated in the New Critics Day at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama organised by Literature Wales and The National Theatre of Wales.

Bridgend Young Critics Scheme developed from a National Theatre Wales production in Bridgend in October 2010 after Bridgend County Borough Council’s Arts and Community Development’s successfully secured funding from Arts Council Wales. The event on Saturday 1 October was an afternoon of discussion, debate and an exclusive insight into the world of critical writing from some of the UK’s leading arts critics. The event marked the end of National Theatre Wales and Literature Wales’ pioneering new critics scheme, in which four emerging arts critics in Wales were given development opportunities, training and mentoring throughout National Theatre Wales’s first year of work.

Bridgend young critic Rachel Williams was invited to join the panel discussion and offer her response to critical writing in the arts from the perspective of a young person.

Rachel said: "As a young critic, I have been given fabulous opportunities to explore my critical voice and experience things I would not normally have the chance to see. Not only that, the event on Saturday proves I am able to open new doors and challenges as well as meet influential people".

John McGrath, Artistic Director of National Theatre Wales added: “I have been very impressed by the quality of the reviews and critiques produced by the young critics involved in the programme. It is great to have young people’s voices at the centre of the debate about theatre in Wales.”
