1mile² Cardiff 2011 1mile² Cardiff celebration day, Sunday 30 October 2011, Wales Millennium Centre

1mile² Cardiff inspires people to explore the environment and communities of their neighbourhoods through the arts. On Sunday 30 October a day of free performances, workshops and exhibitions will share and celebrate local creativity.

This free public event will feature new dance works by award winning India Dance Wales and Jukebox Juniors – stars of TV’s Got To Dance - as well as local organisations Rubicon, Ballet Nimba and street dance trio Shapez and Chloe Loftus in collaboration with Planet Gymnastics Parkour Group. There will be a chance to try out a range of arts activities, including dance, textile and poetry workshops.

The day will feature an exhibition of images of Cardiff by photographer Mahesh Shantaram (Bangalore) who has spent the summer exploring the people and places of the square mile. Workshops include street dance led by Jukebox Juniors, Bharata Natyam led by India Dance Wales, Kurdish Dabke and Electro SwingHop.

Local artists Milkwood will lead a drop-in sewing and textile project called Stitch Your Trip! that will map participants’ journeys and explore sustainable transport. Writer Catriona Ryan and Cardiff University will lead a chance poetry workshop where participants can create spontaneous poems.

The workshops are suitable for beginners of all ages and families are encouraged to participate together. Performances start at 12:00 and activities continue until 18:30.

1mile² Cardiff has been running in the Adamsdown, Butetown, Grangetown and Splott areas of the city since June. The project has encouraged local people to explore the people, places, environments and cultures of their neighbourhoods as part of an international programme led by Visiting Arts.

There will be a launch event on Friday 28 October at Dance House when National Dance Company Wales Associates will present Scheherazade. This new work specially commissioned for 1mile² Cardiff, has been developed in collaboration with photographer Mahesh Shantaram. The performance will be followed by a Q&A.

Tickets are available from Wales Millennium Centre’s Ticket Office: 02920 63 6464 / www.wmc.org

1mile² Cardiff is being delivered in partnership with Cardiff Council, Wales Millennium Centre and Visiting Arts with support from the Arts Council of Wales.
