‘HAPPY HOUR’ - Spectacle Theatre

‘HAPPY HOUR’ - Spectacle Theatre ‘Happy Hour’ continues Spectacle Theatre’s long-running aim of delivering challenging theatre to hard to reach groups. Spectacle Theatre returns in 2011 with a play and workshop about DJ Larry and his world, a South Wales Nightclub.

The production and workshop was commissioned by Spectacle Theatre with the aim of opening a dialogue with both young people and those around them about the risks of substance misuse and connected sexual behaviour. Spectacle Theatre receives support and funding from The Coalfields Regeneration Trust and The National Lottery through the Arts Council of Wales, whose backing offers the opportunity to continue the creation of challenging and quality theatre.

‘Happy Hour’ came to fruition following a series of workshops with young people who revealed some of their feelings about alcohol and relationships. Actor, Director and Silver Commonwealth Games medallist Carys Parry takes the helm directing the production, whilst Paul Swift, writer of some of the company’s most successful plays such as ‘Good For Nothing’, ‘Someone Else’s Shoes’ and ‘Bad Mammy’, aids long-time writer and director Stephen Davis in the development of one of their finest scripts to date. The collaboration of these three creative forces has resulted in a play that is dynamic and contemporary – values that have always been a guiding force for Spectacle Theatre.

Aimed at both young people (11-25) and the professionals that work with them, this is an inclusive project that is followed by the P.U.K.E workshop which promises to develop Prevention, Understanding, Knowledge and Education. It involves the audience directly and allows them the space and time to voice their opinions about the behaviour of the characters. It is an entertaining process that will excite and engage audiences.

Larry asks, “When have I ever been able to just down one?” It is a question we all ask ourselves. “Why can’t I stop?” Smoking, drinking, shopping… But this is Larry’s kingdom, where it’s four shots for a pound, and where young girls like Juliet lie about their age to get inside. One night, Larry gives Juliet a lift home and discovers that they have more in common than he thought.

Except this is a love story, and Larry doesn’t do love. Larry does money, Larry does four shots for a pound. When Juliet meets Romeo, Larry finds himself out in the cold, grappling with feelings he doesn’t understand. This is Club Verona where nothing is as it seems, and Larry is faced with a betrayal that changes everything he thinks about love.

‘Happy Hour’ is a production that promises to engage young people and the professionals who work with them. Come to Club Verona and hear what Larry has to say about love, sex and alcohol, but be careful not to get vomit on your shoes.
