GRANDER AND GREENER
Energy saving initiatives at Swansea Grand Theatre have been paying dividends.

Measures, including switching to low energy light bulbs and encouraging staff, crews and performers to switch off lights and computer monitors, have resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption.

The result is that the city centre theatre, which dates back to the late 1890s, has now earned itself an impressive Category C rating in the Government's Energy Performance Operational Rating Scheme.

Gerald Morris, Strategic Finance and Operations Manager said, "I am very proud of this achievement. Staff from all areas of the theatre have contributed to this reduction in energy consumption and it is our intention to reduce it even further."

The move comes on the back of measures across Swansea Council run buildings to tackle energy consumption in the face of rising energy bills and a desire to cut its carbon footprint.

Initiatives, including the automatic power down of computers throughout all Council buildings at night, is providing an estimated saving of £28,000 a year and a range of other energy-saving efficiencies has also helped the Council cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 8%.

In 2009 the Grand Theatre was awarded Category D of the Government's Energy Performance Operational Rating scheme, which is what would be expected for a building of its size.

However, since 2010 energy saving measures that have been implemented during the last year have changed the theatre's rating and it is now a Category C.
