Theatre show for 3-5 year olds uses children’s own words and stories

Ruby Red Tells Tales is a magical, fairytale inspired theatre production especially for 3-5 year olds that uses the actual words and stories of small children. The Theatr Iolo production commences a UK tour in March and visits Sherman Cymru in Cardiff on 7 April.

Once upon a time Ruby and her friend Ella were waiting - waiting
impatiently for something to happen.
They squabble, they sing, they playfully tell tales:
Fee fi fo fum.
What big teeth you have. All the better to eat you with.
Who's the fairest of them all? You are.
The glass slipper. It fits!

Ruby Red Tells Tales has been created using the words and stories of children from Ninian Park Nursery in Cardiff and St Andrew’s Church in Wales Primary School in the Vale of Glamorgan. Creator and Director Sarah Argent explains:

“In January 2011 I visited Ninian Park and St Andrew’s with my ‘special suitcase’ which contained puppets, toys and objects related to popular fairy stories and folk tales. I encouraged the children to choose something from the suitcase and then to tell me a story inspired by it. I wrote each story down using the exact words that the children used. Then in the rehearsal room we, as a creative team, read all the stories and acted them out. By piecing together all of the different words, phrases and sentences, Ruby Red Tells Tales was created.”

Nick Davies from Arts Council Wales comments:

“It is Theatr Iolo's wholehearted commitment to representing children's thoughts and imaginations so honestly that makes Ruby Red so special. The spinning and weaving of familiar stories, skewed by the hyperactive imaginations of children, keeps the audience's full attention throughout.”

Between them, Sarah Argent and internationally acclaimed theatre company Theatr Iolo have been leading the way in theatre for children and young people in Wales and beyond. Sarah again:

“Theatre for children and young people is now a vital and valued specialism in its own right. It is wonderful, with Theatr Iolo, to be able to export quality created-in-Wales productions for children and young people to the rest of the UK and indeed, the rest of the world. And within Wales, the profile of theatre for children and young people is growing as well – just in Cardiff over the next few months for example, we have fantastic productions for children from the likes of Fevered Sleep and Catherine Wheels as part of Sherman Cymru’s opening season, and Explore!, a children’s festival presented by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Exciting times indeed!”

Ruby Red Tells Tales is on at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff on 7 April at 11am and 2pm. Tickets are £7 and are available from Sherman Cymru’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk
