Scheherazade at Cardiff's St David’s Hall
|
TICKETS have now gone on sale for one of the most ambitious shows staged at St David’s Hall from three of Wales’ national performance companies.
National Dance Company Wales, Welsh National Opera and Literature Wales have combined to work with St David’s Hall as the National Concert Hall of Wales to create a new production based on Rimsky Korsakov’s beautiful Scheherazade on October 9, 2012.
Directed by the Artistic Associate of NDCWales, Roy Campbell-Moore, the evening is based on the fable of Princess Scheherazade who tells over 1001 Arabian Nights stories to delay her execution. “The production will create four new dance scenes with 60 young dancers from four youth dance ensembles to the beautiful music of Rimsky Korsakov, played by the Orchestra of WNO. We also have three new songs especially written for a young choir of 180 young voices that will take the work to being a glorious full-length evening production. “
Since May 2011, 14 professional artists from India and Wales have worked with over 500 students in Bangalore Cardiff and Swansea to create dance, write poetry, make music visual art and animations, and learn new songs for the new production.
“For the new songs, 50 young poets worked with professional writers from Literature Wales to create a new set of poems and stories from the original book and these were given to composers from WNO to set to different sections for the orchestra to play to accompany the youth choir on the night,” he added.
The scores have now been completed and James Cameron, the conductor for the production has already proclaimed them to be 'a beautiful new set of songs that will captivate both the young singers as well as audiences'.
Roy said, “Critical to the success of the project has been the involvement of Cardiff City Council through its Creative Arts Support Team and the Arts Active team from St David’s Hall, National Concert Hall for Wales as a major sponsor while the school staking part receive a coveted ArtsMark award to recognise their commitment to high-level arts for young people.
