SUMMERDANCE 2012: CELEBRATING YOUNG DANCE TALENT

Unique collaboration between top young Welsh dancers and musicians premiers in Cardiff

An exciting collaboration between some of Wales’ best young dancers and musicians will premiere at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall this summer.

summerdance 2012 showcases exceptional youth talent from 40 young dancers aged 14 to 24 from all over Wales and Welsh National Opera’s (WNO) Young Players. Dancers from National Dance Company Wales’ (NDCWales) Associates training scheme will also perform.

summerdance 2012 presents two dance productions at St David’s Hall on 11th August. NDCWales Associates will perform Act II from Scheherazade, while 40 young dancers and the WNO Young Players will premiere Recovered Visions, with a specially-composed score from British composer Richard Barnard.

This new work will be created during a week-long intensive summer school which offers talented young people the chance to perform challenging new work in a professional environment alongside experienced artists. It’s a popular opportunity for young dancers to get noticed and make industry contacts.

“summerdance is a great platform to show off the wonderful youth talent we have in Wales. It’s a challenging week but I’m always delighted by the young dancers’ commitment and ability,” said NDCWales co-founder and Artistic Associate Roy Campbell-Moore. “Former participants have gone on to win places at top UK dance schools, so it’s a very valuable experience.”

This one-off performance is the culmination of a year-round series of training and performance events for young dancers called Future Dance Cardiff. The programme, now in its 13th year, is led by NDCWales dancers and choreographers in a partnership between Arts Active, the education, participation and community engagement team at New Theatre and St David’s Hall and NDCWales.

NDCWales Associates is for talented and committed young dancers from across Wales between the ages of 14 and 19, all of whom are aspiring professional performers. Scheherazade will be performed in full by NDCWales Associates on 9th October at St David’s Hall, Cardiff and is a co-production by NDCWales, WNO, Literature Wales and Cardiff Council through the schools Creative Arts Support Team and Arts Active, and the support of the Paul Hamlyn Pathfinder Project.

summerdance 2012 is on Saturday 11th August at St David’s Hall, Cardiff. For tickets call 02920 878444 or visit stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk
