Memories of Trefechan Bridge 1963
|
Were you a part of the famous protest held on Trefechan Bridge, Aberystwyth in 1963? Would you be willing to share your memories to help create a theatre production to commemorate this historical event?
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, the Welsh language National theatre company, would like to hear from anyone who was part of the Trefechan Bridge protest – the protesters, policemen or a local who witnessed the event – so that your memories can be recorded.
The memories will then be used by three authors to create a site-specific drama ‘Y Bont’, that will be performed in Aberystwyth on 03 February 2013, exactly 50 years since the protest.
A number of people who were part of the protest have already shared their experiences with the Company, but the authors Angharad Tomos, Catrin Dafydd and Ceri Elen want to hear from more people that were involved on the day so that they can have a clear picture of what happened before, during and after the protest.
Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “The protest on Trefechan Bridge is considered the beginning of the battle for the Welsh language therefore it is fitting that we as the National Welsh language theatre company celebrate this historical event. Basing the work on the memories of the people that were there on Trefechan Bridge is vital for us so that we have a true catalogue if the event.
“We have already had interviews with historian John Davies and dramatist Gareth Miles who were both there on the day. I urge anyone who had any connection with the protest to contact us here at Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru so that their account can help us to create this exciting piece of theatre.”
