Wales’ national dance company returns from triumphant tour of China

Wales’ national dance company has returned from a successful three week, five city tour of China. Visiting China as part of UK NOW, a festival celebrating British arts and culture, National Dance Company Wales, (NDCWales), performed in Qingdao, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai.

The Company presented dances that have been created in Wales at the Dance House in Cardiff Bay. The programme included Dream, which was created for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the award-winning solo Whiskers from Company choreographer Eleesha Drennan and NDCWales’ signature work By Singing Light, which includes Welsh folk music and the words of Dylan Thomas.

“We were delighted with the enthusiasm of the Chinese audiences," said NDCWales Artistic Director Ann Sholem. “We all felt very proud to be representing Welsh arts in China – all five venues were spectacular. The shows looked excellent in these theatres and the dancers relished the large stages.”

At the invitation of the British Consulate General in Shanghai, NDCWales delivered a Paralympic workshop in Nanjing, teaching excerpts of Company dances to the Nanjing Disabled Dancers group. NDCWales also enjoyed an interactive master class with students from Xi-an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, and appeared on Chinese television and radio. This was NDCWales’ second visit to China; the Company was supported by the British Council and the Wales Arts International in China.

The Company will launch its 2012 UK autumn tour in Llandudno at Venue Cymru on 2nd October.
