Cardiff Reggae Scene in 1980s Recreated in Ska Musical
|
Following the widely acclaimed sell-out production My Life in CIA, theatre company Give It A Name is back with a revival of their hugely popular ska musical Rude! which will run at the Rockin’ Chair Caribbean Restaurant in Riverside on selected nights from 24 October to 3 November.
There's a new Tory government. Jobs are hard to come by.
The weather isn't up to much. But somewhere in a makeshift club, people are dancing to a new tune. It's 1980. The place is Cardiff. The music is Ska. Here come the rude boys...
Rude! A Ska Musical is written by veteran of the Cardiff Reggae scene and original rudeboy Tony Wright, and continues Give It a Name’s trademark style of immersion, intervention and interaction. Performances will take place in the Rockin’ Chair Carribean Restaurant in Riverside and the company urge audiences to turn up early “for excellent Carribean food and a seat by the pool (table)”.
Life for a young mixed race guy growing up in Splott in the 1980s was not a lot like Dallas: it was more like the OK Corral. But the music was way better. In fact Roddy would tell you that the music saved his life...
The production Is being revived as part of Black History Month Wales 2012. Leanne Rahman, Arts Development Officer at Black Voluntary Sector Network Wales and Black History Month Wales co-ordinator says:
“BVSNW is delighted to be working in partnership with Tony Wright and Give It A Name Theatre to bring a special revival of Rude! A Ska Musical to the Rockin' Chair once again. It's vital for us to promote and support the development of Welsh talent and creativity and Black History Month provides a great platform to showcase Diaspora excellence in arts & culture at a host of venues across our country".
Rude! Is directed by James Williams and the cast will include Shekira Johnson, John Norton and Dean Rehman alongside a 6 piece live band featuring Oliver Wood as singer.
Rude! runs between 24 October and 3 November (excluding 27 and 28 October) at 8pm. Tickets are available from Chapter’s Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or www.chapter.org Performances start at 8pm at the Rockin’ Chair Caribbean Restaurant in Riverside.
