Moist. On the Edge season.

Moist. On the Edge season. When the winner of Sherman Cymru’s 2009 new writing award Script Slam was announced Neil Bebber started to applaud. He was jabbed in the ribs by his neighbour. He had won!

“I’d never won anything before not even £10 on the lottery. It took a couple of days before the excitement kicked in, especially when I started to realise that next time Seven People appeared it could be a full production at Sherman Cymru!

“This was surreal. I fully intended to sit and analyse the words and use it as an exercise to assess what needed improving but... all I could think was, those are my words, they're saying my words, oh my God, people are laughing! The actors and director did such a great job. It was so much better than I'd
envisaged.”

His writing has gone from strength to strength and tonight (Tues) his play Moist will be performed as part of the On the Edge season of script-held performances at Chapter, featuring Newport-based actor Nathan Sussex.

Nathan has performed On The Edge many times and was recently was seen at Chapter, giving a very strong and sensitive performance for The Company of Sirens in Stitching a very challenging play from Anthony Neilson. He will be partnered by Claire Cage who was last seen On the Edge in Mark Jenkins’ brilliant prison drama Downtown Paradise.

The play is then performed at the Dylan Thomas Centre, in Swansea tomorrow (Wednesday) and The Riverfront, Newport (Thursday).

Neil’s film adaptation of Seven People is in development and will be seen at Chapter and the Latitude Film Festival. He is also scriptwriter for Video Wales, a corporate video producer.

Neil originally worked in Graphic Design. But, after being invited to make a short film Cherryade as part of the BBC's Capture Wales project in 2005, he was excited by the prospect of writing for theatre and film. A few years later he wrote and directed his first short film Is Elvis There?, which was shown at Latitude Festival. Then, after winning Script Slam, things sort of snowballed from there.

Moist. On the Edge season. Chapter, Cardiff, Tuesday, October 9; The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea, Wednesday, October 10 and The Riverfront, Newport Thursday, October 11.
