Reminiscences of Childhood: Adapted from the works of Dylan Thomas
|
Dylan Thomas is brought back to life in this vibrant one-man show brought to Abergavenny by stage actor Adrian Metcalfe who has performed the work all over the world to great critical acclaim.
An award-winning debut at the Edinburgh Festival drew accolades such as ‘a gem of a show’ (The Scotsman) and “Dylan Thomas has never seemed so alive” (The Independent).
Drawing on Adrian Metcalfe’s own childhood in Swansea, his interpretation of Thomas’ poetry and prose – presented as a delightful pot-pourri of memories from the writer’s early days - has won international recognition and awards.
Adrian Metcalfe portrays Dylan looking back on his youth and the fascination with words that was to be a life-long obsession.
He uses a wide range of works by the author including The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, Quite Early One Morning, The Collected Poems and Return Journey, seamlessly entwined with Metcalfe’s own prose, and succeeds in creating a delightful, haunting exploration of the work of the great Dylan Thomas.
The show is interspersed with music provided by fine pianist Rob Marshall and also song; in an excerpt from Under Milk Wood in which Metcalfe is transformed into Captain Cat he is joined by Sonia Beck who gives a fine performance as Rosie Probert.
Adrian Metcalfe’s career took off when he played Sinbad Sailors in Under Milk Wood directed by Sir Anthony Hopkins, alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Jonathon Pryce.
Last year, he gained considerable critical recognition for his performance as Colonel Britton in the Restoration Comedy, The Wonder! A Woman Keeps a Secret and he has performed many Shakespearian roles and on TV.
The show is directed by Joe Harmston whose West End credits include Wait Until Dark with Peter Bowles, The Birthday Party with Timothy West and Prunella Scales, The Collection and the Lover by and starring Harold Pinter and A Talent to Amuse.
He was also Assistant Director of the Chichester Festival Theatre, and Associate Director for the Sir Peter Hall Company.
Rob Marshall who studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has won many prizes, and concerto performances include Grieg, Liszt, Schumann, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Beethoven, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and Richard Addinsell’s “Warsaw Concerto” in a special concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of V.E. Day. He is Musical Director for ‘Tour de Force’ Theatre company, piano adjudicator for the Urdd National Eisteddfod, and is also on the executive committee of Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts.
Sonia Beck has played Edith Piaf in the title role and performed many times at the Swansea Grand and Cheltenham Theatres in a variety of modern and classic shows.
