THE stars of the Wardens’ pantomime have gathered in Aberystwyth to launch this year’s show - oh yes they have!
The classic tale of Aladdin will be brought to life at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in January under the direction of Richard Cheshire, who also stars as the dame.
At the launch, invited guests met the cast of Aladdin and were treated to a song from the show, led by musical director, Elinor Powell.
There were also appearances from K9 and Dalek Doris, who will reign terror on the people of Peking in the family-friendly show.
Among the guests was Aberystwyth deputy mayor, Wendy Morris-Twiddy, who said afterwards: “It was wonderful, with the twist of the dalek and K9, fabulous costumes and a very enthusiastic cast, all eager to perform.
“It was good to see a mixture of the local community and students taking on the roles, and this was just an insight to what is in store for us in the panto - one not to be missed.”
Richard Cheshire added: “It was lovely to be so well-supported by the deputy mayor, her family, and all our guests, and to realise how much the Wardens’ pantomime means to the Aberystwyth community.
“It is the loyal support of our audiences which makes it a joyous experience to put on the pantomime.
“They also make it possible for us to put it on every year. Not many people realise how much it costs to embark on a show of this magnitude - the hire of the sets, the costumes, the Arts Centre etc costs around £45,000.”
But no expense will be spared in 2013, which marks a special anniversary for the Wardens.
“This is the Wardens 30th year performing pantomime, the first being Jack and the Beanstalk in 1983,” Richard explained.
“Aladdin promises to be a magical show, full of surprises and spectacular magic carpet rides!”
Also taking part in the show are local youngsters Sam Ebenezer and Bethan Pearce as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, Ioan Guile as the Emperor, Theresa Jones, Nefertiti and Alex Neil, Abanazar.
Choreographer, Carl Ryan, takes to the stage as the genie of the lamp, third-year drama student, Jenny Boote, is the spirit of the ring and Huw Bates, Paul Ditch and Julie McNicholls play the comedy policemen. |
