Lilies on the Land
|
One of the most popular plays of the last few years will be visiting west Wales for the first time soon!
Louche Theatre will be presenting ‘Lilies on the Land’ by the Lion’s Part which tells the remarkable story of four women who volunteer for the Women’s Land Army to help keep Britain supplied with food during the Second World War.
They made their “home fields their battlefields” as the propaganda of the time put it. They were often dubbed “the forgotten Army”, and it wasn’t until 2008 that those still alive finally received special badges honouring their work. Yet this wonderful show is perhaps an even better tribute to the pluck and fortitude of these brave, cheerful women.
The action begins with the announcement of Churchill’s death in 1965, prompting the four women to look back to their days “on the land”.
Being based on real incidents described by former Land Girls, it has the satisfying tang of lived experiences and is beautifully crafted as it follows the farming year, from season to season, whilst also covering the whole of the War years from 1939 to 1945.
It is the brave, authentic words of the Land Girls themselves that make this show so special as they vividly describe the back-breaking labour of potato picking, the horrors of mucking out the pig shed, the relief of warming their frozen hands on the cow’s udders at milking time and the euphoria of learning to drive a tractor and plough a perfect furrow!
Director, Harry Durnall said: “As we researched the play and the Land Army, we were moved, amused and came to the strong conviction that these women showed the British character at its absolute best”
Louche Theatre will be presenting ‘Lilies on the Land’ at the Morlan Centre, Aberystwyth from Friday April 19th to Sunday April 21st at 7.30pm, with matinees on both Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. The show then transfers to The Tabernacle , Machynlleth on Saturday 27th April and The Dragon Theatre , Barmouth on May 4th.
