Writing Group launch 12 plays to the world!

Writing Group launch 12 plays to the world! Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Writing for Performance Group celebrate its third anniversary with its most challenging project yet with the launch of their audio drama project from a web-platform using social media interfaces featuring plays by thirteen writers and including performances from over 15 performers playing over 50 characters.

The EarCandy project began over a year ago with two radio writing masterclasses with Alan Harris and Dan Rebellato arranged and funded by Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The writers were then asked to pitch ideas for short plays. The project also brought in Lucy Gough for a radio writing workshop where she offered feedback to each writer on their play as an open workshop.

The project also included a performing for radio workshop which offered the opportunity for local community actors to expand their vocational skills ready to perform audio plays for the first time.

The website will be launched in the Arts Centre bar on Tuesday 28th May and two plays will be released for the audience to listen to on their laptops and phones, then for the week following two plays will be released each day at 1pm. Listeners will also be able to purchase a CD collection of all the plays. The website will also feature films of the writers talking about their plays and sharing what they learned about writing for radio through the project. There will be a few special films offering additional material surrounding the subjects of some of the plays and social media interfaces of both documentary and creative material.

Sandra Bendelow who is involved as Producer for Scriptography Productions and as a writer said, “EarCandy will feature 12 plays all between 5 and 10 minutes long. The plays offer a vast range of subject matters and styles which is always a strong feature of any project produced by the group.

Plays cover themes like suppression of imagination and voice, privatisation of the fire services, the impact of computer technology, and characters include an enchanted rubber duck, a 400 year old church bell, a woman in a coma, a dog and a talking car. Everyone involved in the project has enjoyed every minute of the project and we’re really excited about sharing the plays with everyone and listening to them ourselves.”
