Featuring the music of Rick Wakeman, Directed by Stuart H. Bawler

The strangest, funniest, psychedelic Journey.
With roots stretching two decades back into rave and festival culture, a Cardiff-based theatre group called HUMMADRUZ is taking performance to bold new frontiers. This uniquely music-inspired experience, which uses ultraviolet light to bring puppets, props and costumes to dazzling life in the dark, continues to evolve and has more than enough surprises up its sleeves to keep audiences enchanted and inspired. Encompassing the big bang, prehistoric monsters, angels, demons and a healthy dose of humour, the double bill is ambitious and breath-taking, journeying into love, war, and the centre of our planet. The bright young team behind the spectacle is an open access youth group including those in school, higher education and employment, people with special needs, learning disabilities, young offenders and LGBTs.
With next year marking the 40th anniversary of Rick Wakeman’s ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’album, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and originally selling 14 million copies, one of the two shows plays the album straight through, bringing to life its absorbing, otherworldly adventure with puppetry, circus skills, and dance. In Eye Wonder, we follow an “Everyman” from his mind-numbing office life into a fantastical world of imagination, wizardry, robots and romance. Stuart Bawler, the group’s director, said “We like to be unconventional, we push boundaries.” Through a love of diverse music and oddball creativity, Hummadruz will certainly be leaving a big impression, not least on the backs of your retinas.
The group’s future plans include staging Holst’s The Planets with a full live youth orchestra, and collaborating with a big techno act at a warehouse or festival.
HUMMADRUZ is supported by Cardiff Youth Service, The Arts Council of Wales and the British Council’s Youth in Action Scheme.
