‘Tea with Mamgu’

White Desert Productions, the London Welsh Centre’s resident theatre company, is to restage its hugely successful production of ‘Tea with Mamgu’ in September 2013 with a tour of the UK performed at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday 11 September. To book contact Aberystwyth Arts Centre ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre. The production, which premiered in April this year to fantastic audience and critical feedback, is the story of Jinny and her failing mind. As she wanders from reality to memory and back, we explore snippets of her life; from meetings over tea and cake with her lifelong friends, to conversations with her grandson Dylan and her Husband Dylan Snr. The play is an exploration of what the early stages of dementia can be like for both the sufferer and their loved ones.

The play is written by D J Evans, a writer from Wales who has been shortlisted for the Pulse New Writing Award. He has also been highly commended for his poetry and short stories in both the UK and America.

The production boasts a diverse and talented cast of young actors, who flit between youthful bounce, aged wisdom and wise cracks; they have been reunited for this autumn tour. The tour will see White Desert premiering its first new writing production at a number of venues across the UK. Both the cast and crew are excited about bringing the production to a wider audience. The writer and director D J Evans said that:

“Seeing ‘Tea with Mamgu’ performed again will be fantastic! It will be all the more poignant for me, as it’s being performed at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, which is where I used to see shows with my Great-grandmother when I was small. The show is dedicated to her memory and it’s still talked about and discussed at the venues we performed at previously. It’s a play that makes you laugh and think at the same time. One on my friends, who lost both of his grandparents to dementia, said that it was perfect and that he wouldn’t change a thing.”

One audience member remarked that the production was:

“A very enjoyable performance, both sad and funny. Time went by so quickly watching the play. Would love to see it again.”

Whilst another commented that:

“I absolutely adored it. Nothing has ever made me cry so naturally outside of a film. Hilarious, thought-provoking and very real. A true testament to anyone who’s ever had and loved a nan.”

The production, which will be touring from the 9th September 2013, will be a real treat for anyone who sees it and promises to be a show that is not to be missed. As resident theatre company of the London Welsh Centre, White Desert is producing several productions throughout the year. These include staging New Writing and Classic and Modern texts, using a range of actors from both the London and Welsh communities. The tour of Tea with Mamgu follows on from three highly successful productions at the London Welsh Centre: the latest of which has been a modern dress production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ and will be followed by a community production of Dylan Thomas’ classic ‘Under Milk Wood’.
