The Art of Design is Celebrated at Exhibition Launch

The biggest theatre design festival ever seen in the UK was celebrated last night at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, with the official launch party of World Stage Design 2013.

Over 400 international designers, artists, performers and industry leaders gathered alongside key figures from Wales’ creative industries to officially open the festival exhibition, which will now run until 14th September.

The exhibition features the work of over 100 international performance designers, and offers a fascinating insight into how the shows we watch and enjoy are actually made. Design is a key part of all live performance events such as theatre, opera, dance and site specific events. The World Stage Design exhibition and festival celebrates this sometimes under-appreciated art form, and illustrates how the work of the designer can make our enjoyment of the arts that bit more special.

Exhibits include breathtaking costumes, sets, props, scale models, lighting and sound exhibits from theatre, opera dance and international performance events.

The launch was officially opened by Edwina Hart, Welsh Government Minister for Economy, Science and Transport and Dr Shen Lyushen, Taiwanese Representative to the UK.

Minister for the Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart, said:

"I'm delighted to open this week long international festival which gives us an excellent opportunity to showcase the expertise that we have in Wales and to show the world just how dynamic Cardiff is as a centre for performance design. We are very proud of the fact that Cardiff is the first European city to host the event and that we can welcome the world's best in the stage design business to Wales. I hope that they'll gain inspiration from each other and that the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Cardiff prove to be inspirational hosts."

Sean Crowley, Project Leader for World Stage Design and Director of Drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama “It’s been remarkable to witness people from all corners of the world coming together in Cardiff to make this wonderful event happen. Everybody involved - volunteers, students and professionals - have created a unique moment in time and provided a platform to share the creativity of design for performance with the world.”

The exhibition is at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and is open daily from 9.30 – 8pm. The exhibition runs until September 14. Entry is free.

Alongside the free design exhibition The World Stage design 2013 festival offers a full programme of performances, masterclasses, lectures and workshops on stage design until September 14th.
