Llanast! Gareth Miles’ translation of Le Dieu du Carnage by Yasmina Reza
|
2 mothers + 2 fathers + 2 sons x whisky + tulips + mobile phone = carnage
Cast: Emlyn Gomer, Rebecca Harries, Lauren Phillips, Llion Williams
Director: Betsan Llwyd
In November 2012 Theatr Bara Caws staged a production of Llanast!, Gareth Miles’ masterful translation of Le Dieu du Carnage, by Yasmina Reza. Last year the play was performed solely in Caernarfon and Cardiff, both venues selling out completely, and so, due to popular demand the company have decided to resurrect the play which will now tour throughout Wales, opening on November 12 (Galeri, Caernarfon) and closing in Aberystwyth Arts Centre (November 30).
Two sets of parents meet to discuss their unruly sons. As time goes on, however, the civilized veneer soon slips, and carnage ensues! A comedy of manners without the manners.
This humorous and scathing play won an Olivier award for Best New Comedy in London, as well as three Tony awards. The play has been released recently as a film by Roman Polanski – Carnage.
Our production also received a deal of attention after receiving two nominations for the Theatre Critics in Wales Awards – one for the Best Production in the Welsh language, and the other for Rebecca Harries as Best Actress. We were very pleased that Rebecca won, and are confident that audiences will flock to see the production once again.
“An excellent translation, exceptional performances, a first class production skillfully directed. This performance of Llanast! was an unmitigated success due to the quality of the original material, a talented cast, Betsan Llwyd’s skillful direction and Theatr Bara Caws’s professional staging.”
