‘Sgin ti Syniad?’ film wins two awards
|
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Galeri are very pleased to announce the achievement of the ‘Sgin ti Syniad?’ group in the Media4Schools awards this week. They were awarded for the Best Welsh Film and Best Community Film for ‘Pam?’ in a special awards ceremony at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.
‘Sgin ti Syniad?’ was funded by Reach the Heights, a Welsh Government initiative supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the European Social Fund. The project was run in partnership between Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, Galeri, Partneriaeth Pobl Peblig Partnership and Sherman Cymru.
The project was based in Caernarfon in 2012, and it was a community project that worked with young people between 11 and 19 years old. The film ‘Pam?’ shows life through the eyes of young people who were brought up on the Peblig estate, and their relationship with money. As part of the project, the group also opened a shop in Caernarfon called ‘Y Siop Siarad’.
Following on from the project, the ‘Sgin ti Syniad?’ group were nominated for Media4Schools awards, and were successful in two categories. Two young people who were part of the project, Dylan Wyn Roberts and Amy Bohana were present at the awards ceremony in Cardiff. Amy said of her experience creating the film;
“I really enjoyed it all. The acting, filming, the story, everything. We had a lot of fun, and we’re so pleased to win the award today.”
Since taking part in the project, Dylan and Amy have gone into work and lead their own projects. Dylan now works in a kitchen in Pen y Gwryd hotel and loves his work there. Amy is the busy mother of two year old Ruby J, and has re-started a Majorettes team in Peblig which gives young girls who live on the estate the chance to compete and to travel.
Bethan Marlow lead the project with Caroline Vasquez and Sarah Bickerton, and Bethan was over the moon that they won the award;
“I’m just so pleased for them. Making the film was quite a journey for the lives of Peblig’s young people, and I’m so pleased that they trusted myself, Carolina and Sarah so much to let us in. Seeing Amy and Dylan’s face today was brilliant! They’re such strong and determined individuals and I’m so pleased now to be able to call them my friends.”
