Theatre Versus Oppresssion

Following the success of previous workshops, Theatre Versus Oppression will be holding more workshops in early January 2014 at their offices at Bute Town History and Arts Centre in Cardiff Bay. Delivered by Dr JS Hartley the workshops are ideal for those wanting to learn techniques and knowledge on body language, managing conflict situations and performance techniques.

From 3 – 11 January, Theatre Versus Oppression will be running three workshops, suitable for those in the arts but also other industries who want to manage conflict and difficult situations as well as learning about body language as well.

Rainbow of Desire (3-5 January, 10am – 5pm) is ideal for Teachers, Educators, Social Workers, Psychologists, Mental Health Professionals, Volunteers and Youth Workers. Rainbow of Desire is intended to examine conflict within individuals and groups, and to seek ways to resolve those situations of conflict.

One of Theatre Versus Oppression’s most popular workshops is on Body Language (6-8 January, 6pm-9pm) and has aided in wide range of careers. Easy and fun, this course teaches the student how to read our non-verbal body language. Learn to read the unconscious cues that we all send and receive. Whether we believe it or not, we are saying so much more about ourselves than we realise. Body Language is therefore relevant to management and leadership, to acting and communicating and to all aspects of work and business where communications can be seen and physically observed among people.

The third workshops is Theatre of the Oppressed as an acting methodology & Performance (9-11 January, 10am – 5pm. Performance to take place on evening of 11th and 12th This is Optional). Over the three day course students will be taken various Theatre of the oppressed/Boal techniques for acting and devising. At the end of the three days you will use the techniques to devise a piece which you can be shown and reflect how in just three days a full length production can be ready for performance.
Delivering the workshops will be Applied Theatre Practioner, speaker, councillor and writer, Dr JS Hartley. Dr Hartley and Theatre Versus Oppression recently created the hard hitting Welsh production of SOLD, which was based on real accounts of Human Trafficking.

As well as teaching and lecturing on both drama theory and practice, Dr Hartley specialises in Applied Theatre focusing on theories and methodology related to Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. She is the founder of Theatre Versus Oppression and now uses her work with the charity worldwide.

She has authored various publications including plays, academic articles, and poetry, most notably the newly released and highly acclaimed Applied Theatre in Action: a journey.
