New Welsh language performance group comes to the Urdd, Wales Millennium Centre this January

Aimed at 7-11 year old Welsh speakers, Castachân, a fun, high energy performance group, will hold its first session at the Urdd City Sleep over in January. Led by talented sisters, Elan and Miriam Issac, Castachân, promises to offer lively, creative sessions for budding young performers, filled with singing and dancing. A joint partnership between Wales Millennium Centre and the Urdd, this new performance group forms part of the ever growing Welsh language offer at Wales Millennium Centre.

Elan Issac studied Theatre and Performance at Leeds University, graduating in 2010 with a 2:1 BA Honours. Whilst at Leeds she choreographed six full scale stage musicals including Oklahoma!, Grease, Anything Goes and Footloose, as well as choreographing for course productions such as The Wife of Heracles and All’s Fair. Since leaving University Elan has worked on many performance projects such as choreographing the children’s musical for the opening of the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Swansea 2011 (with Theatre Na nÓg). She has appeared as a dance expert on programmes such as Am Ddrama, Tîm Talent, Dawns-Tastig and Dudley Pryd o Sêr and has recently been choreographing for a programme which uses and teaches Makaton (a language programme integrating speech, manual signs, and graphic symbols developed to help people who find communication difficult). Elan regularly teaches dance and has led the dance section of a Welsh language performing arts club for several years.

Miriam Issac studied singing at the ‘Musicians Institute’ in Los Angeles, where she was crowned the ‘Most Outstanding Vocalist’ during her final semester. For the past 8 years, she has been working as a soloist and a backing singer for artists such as Endaf Emlyn, Huw Chiswell, Caryl Parry Jones, Sibrydion, Mark Evans and Ryland Teifi, and has performed on many shows inclduing ‘Wedi 7’, ‘Rhydian’, ‘Noson yng Nghwmni Eden’, ‘Noson Lawen’ and ‘Caryl’. She has also worked as a vocal coach for ‘Theatr na nÓg’ and Theatr Ieuenctid (Menter Caerdydd). Over Christmas, Miriam has been performing in the Pantomime 'Jack Russell a'r Goeden Ffa’ in Crymych alongside Rebecca Harries, Rolant Prys, Rhodri Evan and Iwan John.

Sarah Roberts, Creative Learning Manger said: “Ensuring that we offer a regular Welsh Language programme is a primary focus for the Creative Learning team at Wales Millennium Centre, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer this exciting Welsh language performance group from January. We are also looking forward to the opportunity Castachân offers us to work closely with our resident company, Urdd Gobaith Cymru.”

Tim Edwards, Director at the Urdd City Sleepover said: “As one of Europe’s leading children and young people’s charities we have an unrivalled track record in providing arts experiences through the medium of Welsh. Castachân is a great opportunity for children to actively participate in performance classes and grow their experience, knowledge and confidence with experts in their field. This partnership with Wales Millennium Centre will provide a fantastic platform for our future stars to grow their talent.”

“I’m really excited to start Castachân,” said Elan. “I love working with young people who are excited about the arts and performing, and especially through the medium of Welsh! There is very little on offer for young, Welsh-speaking performers in the Cardiff and Vale area, so I’m really pleased we can offer children across South Wales this great opportunity to make new friends outside of school and to do so having lots of fun. It’s great to be working with my sister on this project too. We’ve worked together many times before and had lots of fun doing so. We’re a good partnership; both bring different skills to the table – Miriam with the singing and vocal experience and myself with the dance.”

Castâchan’s first session will be on Wednesday 22 January, 5-7pm, in the Urdd City Sleepover, Cardiff Bay. For further details, prices and booking, please contact lisa@urdd.org / 029 2063 5671
