TREE OF LEAF AND FLAME
|
Award- winning storyteller Daniel Morden brings his new show TREE OF LEAF AND FLAME to Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Saturday 22 February, 2014.
A woman made of flowers....
A stolen child....
A palace of glass....
A song that stops time....
Spellbinding storytelling and dazzling musicianship come together in this unique retelling of The Mabinogi – the oldest stories of Britain. Haunting and dreamlike, these tales link two worlds: the everyday world we all inhabit, and Annwn, a mysterious Otherworld where nothing is as it seems.
Every encounter with Annwn brings either a blessing or a curse. Sometimes it is hard to tell which....
This powerful combination of story and live music will transport you to a land of magic and danger.
Daniel Morden (The Devil’s Violin) is one of the UK’s most popular storytellers. He has told tales for a living for twenty-four years. He has performed all over the world, from Australia to the Arctic. His passionate, lucid storytelling has been seen at the National Theatre, on Broadway, at many Literature Festivals and in the souks of Marrakech. His book of these tales, Tree of Leaf and Flame, won the Wales Books Council Tir Na Nog Prize in 2013. His storytelling skills have transformed these tales into gripping yarns that capture the mood of Wild Wales.
Daniel says-"I've been haunted by the Mabinogi ever since my teens. I've wandered over the places where these mysterious events are supposed to have taken place. I've pondered these dreamlike stories, inhabited by all-too-human characters. I have told them whenever I could for some 20 years. This show is the result of the discoveries and insights I have collected along the way.
"Music plays a prominent part in these adventures. It indicates the presence of magic. What better way to evoke a sense of mystery and danger then than through the haunting melodies of Dylan Fowler and Oliver Wilson- Dickson?
" These tales are some of the oldest in Britain. They should be more widely known. They deserve to be told. They contain images which lodge in the mind.
"They show us human nature has not changed in thousands of years. They grip us, and move as and amaze us, just as they did our ancestors.
"I am thrilled to have this chance to give them a wider airing."
Dylan and Oliver are nationally renowned for their passionate, powerful music. They have toured the UK with groups such as Jamie Smith’s Mabon and the Ian Macmillan Orchestra.
The performance starts at 7.30pm on Saturday 22 February, 2014. Tickets are £14 (£13). To book please contact Aberystwyth Arts Centre ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre
