Wales at British Dance Edition 2014

“The strength and the diversity of our presence reflect the dynamism of dance in Wales,” Carole Blade, Coreo Cymru

Dance artists Jo Fong, Deborah Light, Eddie Ladd and Joanna Young and National Dance Company Wales are this weekend at British Dance Edition 2014 in what is seen as the strongest presence from Wales at the key showcase event.

Now taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow, BDE is the UK dance industry’s leading opportunity for companies and independent dance artists to present themselves and their work to promoters and producers from the UK and across the globe.

While the three day programme is aimed at UK and international dance professionals with performances, networking, and trade fair and social events there are also public performances.

Carole Blade, who heads up Coreo Cymru, the creative producer for dance in Wales, says: "This is the strongest representation dance from Wales has enjoyed at British Dance Edition which is the most important showcase of the best of British dance for the UK and international dance industry. In addition to NDCWales, Jo and Deborah presenting work, artists Eddie Ladd and Joanna Young are taking part in the Fair Exchange element of BDE.

"The strength and the diversity of our presence reflect the dynamism of dance in Wales and it is crucial for our artists, whether independent or working in our dance companies, to spread that message.

"Hundreds of artists and producers, support organisations, venue programmers and funders are here at BDE and it vital that Wales is able to profile what we have to offer and for our artists to show venue programmers what is available to take from Wales to their audiences."

Cardiff-based Deborah Light is presenting her three-woman show Hide which is currently touring Wales and London. She said, “BDE is an opportunity to contextualise my work in a broader, international framework. It offers exposure to potential partners and I hope to initiate and develop creative relationships that will support the presentation of my work and the development of my practice.”

Also currently touring is the installation work Witness by Jo Fong. The Cardiff-based performer and choreographer said, “For Witness to be selected for British Dance Edition is a fantastic platform and an acknowledgement of my work. It’s a great opportunity to present what I believe to be important to international and national presenters.”
